A high-quality vehicle film is an investment – and with the right care, you can significantly extend its lifespan. Whether hood stripes, sun visors, or side stripes: those who follow a few simple rules will enjoy their tuning look for many years.
In this guide, we'll show you what matters when it comes to film care – from proper cleaning and handling scratches to optimal storage of unmounted film products.
How long does a vehicle film last?
With correct installation and regular care, a lifespan of 3 to 7 years is realistic. Our cast premium films at Folientechnik Bayer are UV-resistant and weatherproof – the basic prerequisite for a long lifespan. However, what you do with it afterwards is also crucial.
The following factors particularly influence durability:
-
Regular and gentle cleaning
-
Protection from direct sunlight (garage or shelter)
-
Avoidance of aggressive cleaning agents and car washes with brushes
-
Prompt removal of bird droppings, insect residue, and road grime
Proper cleaning – what you need to know
Cleaning is the most important care factor. Incorrect methods can permanently damage the film – even if the damage only becomes visible later.
The right cleaning agent
Only use special cleaning products for films, available from specialist retailers. Normal car washes, solvents, or aggressive cleaners can attack the surface and destroy the film's protective layer.
⚠️ Important: Not all care products are equally suitable for glossy and matte films. Always make sure to use the correct product for your film type.
The right washing technique
How to wash your film correctly:
-
Prefer hand washing – automatic brush car washes can lift the film edges and cause scratches
-
Use a microfiber cloth or soft sponge – no abrasive materials
-
Use a high-pressure cleaner only with sufficient distance (at least 30 cm) and a shallow angle
-
Do not wash film surfaces in direct sunlight – the film should be cool
-
Wash the vehicle every 2–3 weeks to prevent dirt from settling
Gloss film vs. matte film – different care
Gloss film
Glossy films are a little less complicated to care for. Light scratches can be treated with a special high-gloss polish to make them partially invisible. A protective sealant also increases the gloss level and protects against UV radiation, water spots, and insect residues.
Matte film
Matte films require special attention. They must never be polished – otherwise, they will become unintentionally shiny in the treated areas and the matte look will be permanently destroyed. Waxes are also not suitable for matte surfaces. Only use care products that are explicitly designed for matte films.
💡 Tip: For stubborn stains on matte film, it's better to let them soak than to rub – this protects the surface.
Removing adhesive residue
Sometimes price tags, parking discs, or old stickers leave annoying adhesive residue on the film. These can be removed residue-free with a suitable special cleaner for films. Important: Do not use normal adhesive remover or petrol – this will attack the film.
Regular inspection
Regularly inspect your film for damage such as cracks, bubbles, or peeling at the edges. The sooner you discover such spots, the easier and cheaper the repair will be. A thorough check is particularly worthwhile after winter, as road salt and cold can stress the film.
Storage of unmounted film products
If you purchase film products from Folientechnik Bayer in advance or plan an installation, proper storage is crucial. Store our film products in a cool, dry, and dark place. Under these conditions, they can be stored for up to 2 years – without any loss of quality.
⚠️ Avoid: Direct sunlight, high humidity, and temperature fluctuations significantly shorten the shelf life of the film before installation.
